A US EIN from Sri Lanka: what it really does.

An EIN is a tax ID—not a passport, company, bank account, or guaranteed payment-processor approval. Here is the clean version of the process.

Educational sample only—not an IRS document. A real EIN normally uses the format XX-XXXXXXX.

What is an EIN?

An Employer Identification Number is a nine-digit federal tax identification number issued by the US Internal Revenue Service to businesses and other entities. Despite the word “employer,” entities can need or request one for tax, banking, and other valid business reasons.

An EIN does not create a company. Form the relevant legal entity first when formation is required for your case.

Can someone in Sri Lanka apply?

The IRS provides international application methods for applicants whose principal place of business is outside the United States. The correct route and fields depend on the entity and responsible party. International applicants generally cannot use the IRS online EIN application when they have no legal residence, principal place of business, or principal office in the US.

Use the official route. Never substitute a borrowed US identity, false address, or nominee for the real responsible party.

Information usually needed

  • The entity’s exact legal name and formation details
  • The responsible party’s truthful identity and tax-ID status
  • The principal business address and contact details
  • The reason for applying and the entity’s real activity
  • A completed and reviewed Form SS-4

A third-party designee may help with the application when properly authorised, but the IRS says nominees are not authorised to apply as if they were the responsible party.

Does an EIN unlock Stripe?

No. Sri Lanka is not currently listed as a directly supported Stripe payments country. A valid US business may be eligible to apply in the United States, but Stripe separately verifies the entity, owners, representative, bank account, website, products, and risk. An EIN is one document in that wider file.

That is why ein.lk positions the service as EIN application guidance—not a Stripe guarantee.

How much does it cost, and how long does it take?

The IRS does not charge a fee for an EIN. A service may charge for preparation and support. Processing time varies by application channel and IRS workload, so treat fixed-day guarantees carefully.

ein.lk’s launch service price is LKR 10,000. It covers case review, SS-4 preparation guidance, international-route guidance, and Sinhala/English support. See the current pricing and scope.

Before you apply

  1. Confirm that the entity exists and the legal name is exact.
  2. Identify the true responsible party.
  3. Decide the valid business reason for the EIN.
  4. Make sure your future bank and payment-provider information can match the same facts.
